Rim strips go on the inside of the rim. They help protect your tube from being punctured or pinched by the spoke nipples. Rather than using tape and making a mess, just replace the rim strip, it's cheap insurance.

Great fit and protection on my 18 inch rimes. These are a little wider than the originals so even more protection.
