Can Can overcharge on ealy models without headlight relays.

Posted by Curtis on 28th Jan 2022

These units can over charge on early bikes that do not have separate headlight relays which draw power directly from the battery instead of through the main harness and handlebar switch-gears. The problem is not necessarily a faulty Reg/Rec unit, it's just that the regulator senses voltage from the main "Ignition ON" power bus on the main harness. On early models there is an unavoidable voltage drop on the harness when the headlight/running lights are turned on causing the regulator to overcompensate and charge the battery in excess of 16v. This was the case on my CB750K4 (1974) with all new wiring, switch gears, ignition switches, etc. A solution is to either install 2 relays for the headlight (HI/LOW) so when the headlight is switched on it pulls power directly from the battery instead of the main harness. Or, what I did was to install a single relay between the regulator sense wire and the battery (triggered by the "ignition on" bus power) so that when the ignition is turned on the regulator senses voltage straight off the battery. I now get a consistent 14.5-14.8v regardless of the headlight being on or off.

    No hassle

I bought a cheaper unit and had all kind of problems. Got this one, plug it in. Presto, voltage to specs.

    Perfect part

Works great, I have a '71 CB500. The only issue is the plug doesn't match up with the original harness, luckily 4 into1 sells the exact locking connector (6.3mm - .250" Series 6 Pin) that will replaced the the original and plug right into the the new rectifier/regulator.

    As advertised Works Well!

Great product, easy to install, I had to remove a bib-connector from Rectifier, and soldier all wires together, which took about an hour. Works great, just a little concerned with over charging. The instructions say to check battery at 2500 to 3500 RPM and voltage should be around 14.5, but mine was well over 15.75 on a new volt meter. I run the bike the Headlight on when I'm not idling and it seems to working fine and not over charging.

I recently installed this on my newly completed Honda CB350F chassis / CB400F engined Cafe bike build and it mounted and terminated very easely as per the instructions. And based on before and after battery voltage readings, it's working perfectly and thanks.
